Bio

Attorney Michael A. Maas, a Wisconsin licensed attorney, began his legal career in 2006 as a general practice attorney representing clients in civil litigation matters, business transactions, and drafting estate plans. Michael now focuses exclusively on Estate Planning, Disability & Medicaid Planning, Trust Settlement and Probate matters. He is dedicated to a different approach in providing legal services that begins with educating every client and providing advice based on the client’s goals, values and objectives.

Believing that “everyone has a plan” whether they have nothing or the most complex documents, Michael’s goal is to provide all of his clients with the information and advice regarding the consequences of not planning as well as the benefits of different types of estate plans. This allows his clients to choose the plan that works best for their unique situation and gives them the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for their family. Michael’s educational and client-centered approach allows clients to understand the importance of proper planning and the value it provides for their family and future generations.

While concentrating his efforts on avoiding probate and asset protection for his estate planning clients, Michael also specializes in the area of Medicaid (Title 19) Planning, which is helping clients protect assets in the event care is needed in assisted living or nursing home care. He firmly believes individuals and families have already paid for Medicaid benefits through income taxation and should be able to keep as much of their assets as possible, ultimately leaving a legacy to their family. This is particularly true for clients who want to prevent that cabin, cottage, family property or family farm from being sold to pay for long term care or subject to estate recovery (liens) by the State.

Michael graduated from Crivitz High School and still has family and friends in the north-woods area. He served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps, both Active & Reserve duty in Green Bay, WI. Michael graduated Summa Cum Laude with Distinction in Major earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance with a minor in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Upon graduation he moved with his family to Virginia Beach, VA to study law at Regent University School of Law, one of three distinctively Christian law schools in the United States.

During law school Michael worked for the university and was a member of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). In his final year of law school he was accepted into the Commonwealth of Virginia’s law student internship program where he worked for the Virginia Beach Commonwealth Attorney’s Office (District Attorney) and prosecuted over 100 misdemeanor appeals in front of the Circuit Court.

Upon graduation from law school in 2006, Michael and his family moved back to Green Bay where he resides today. In 2010 Michael felt the call to serve the nation again and received a commission into the United States Army Reserve Judge Advocate General Corps. Major Maas currently serves as Deputy Team Leader, 214th Legal Operations Detachment in Madison, WI.

Michael is blessed with a wonderful family. His bride, Kimberly, works as a Medical Social Worker (LCSW) for the Department of Veterans Affairs-Green Bay Clinic. His three daughters Lakyn (22), Sabree (19), and Elianna (16) along with the family Golden Doodle (Major) and Cockapoo (Milo) keep him busy at home. Michael is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin and a member of Wealth Counsel, a nationwide collaboration of estate planning attorneys and other legal, tax and business professionals. He is also a member of the Wisconsin Council of Estate Planning Attorneys.
